How I Started My Tech Journey
My Intro to tech, challenges and where I am now and lessons so far.
Tech, as it is, is a whole world of its own. Getting into tech would require patience, commitment, sacrifice, and much practice.
In this article, I will be sharing my experience so far in the tech industry and how far I've come.
Let's dive in!!
The Genesis
My life as a techie started in 2020 during the lockdown. I was bored, and I figured I could use that time to learn something new and develop myself since I had a lot of extra time on my hands, so I decided to get involved in tech.
Seeing how different apps work and perform different functions piqued my interest. I wanted to know how they worked and what caused them to work that way. Another thing that stirred up my passion for tech was the interactiveness of webpages, the uniqueness in their designs and the creativity in every website/webpage.
Getting Started
Now, I was fully interested in getting into the tech world. I downloaded and visited the following apps and websites;
Grasshopper - a free app created by Google that teaches users how to code.
w3Schools. and a bunch of other apps and websites.
I was on a roll! and I was super excited to learn and start building my websites.
The Pause
I started learning HTML and CSS on those websites and apps, and each time my code didn't work, I would get discouraged. Plus, I didn't have a laptop at the time, so coding on my phone and still not getting it to work was a significant setback.
I got uninterested, deleted the apps and stopped coding altogether. I was oblivious to the fact that things like this take time.
The Return
In the latter part of 2021, my Uncle, who is a software engineer and well-grounded in tech, asked me about my interests, career goals and job aspirations. I told him about my interest in tech and my experience in tech at the time. He advised me and gave me the support I needed by helping me get different resources to resume and re-ignite my passion for tech. At the time, I had gotten a laptop, so coding became more manageable for me.
Where I Am Now
So far, I've learned HTML and CSS with the help of the websites listed above, and I'm currently learning Javascript and React. I enrolled in this online Software Engineering school - AltSchool Africa, where I take FrontEnd Engineering as a course.
What I've Learnt So Far
It's a process, and it can't be rushed. Your code won't always work how you want it to, and it is 100% normal.
Make sure to join online communities that share your interests in tech.
Be eager to learn; In this constantly changing world of tech, you can't afford to stay stuck in one field of tech. Learn new things, try out new technologies, take risks and watch yourself become a better developer!
Seek help whenever you're experiencing difficulties. It could be from a mentor, the online communities you're in, or the internet.
It's okay to get tired. Take breaks, Relax a bit, recharge and find inspiration.
Be Consistent; Tech geniuses weren't made overnight. To become good at anything, you must do it consistently. Learn to practice code whether or not it works.
